Plaza de Oriente, Palacio Real, Ópera. The Teatro Real stands at the exact centre of Madrid, surrounded by the places that define the city. The Main Hall of the Teatro Real seats 1,958 people across six floors around one of the largest stages in Europe. A space designed for the most demanding productions in the world. That exclusivity is part of what makes it different.

And when the format does not call for the whole auditorium, the Teatro Real adapts. The Foyer, the terrace, the second-floor salons and the Sala de Orquesta add options for any scale, from the most intimate meeting to the largest gala, all within a building of 78,000 square metres in the centre of Madrid.

3. A history worth telling

The Teatro Real opened on 19 November 1850 with a performance of Donizetti's La Favorita before Queen Isabel II. Since then, its walls have withstood fires, declarations of ruin, political interference and a civil war. Today it is one of the most prestigious opera houses in Europe.

Giuseppe Verdi passed through here, receiving eleven ovations in 1863 before being received by the Royal Household. So did the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Richard Strauss in 1908. And Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, invited by Alfonso XIII. And in 1997, the reopening as an opera house presided over by the King and Queen of Spain, with original Picasso sets on stage.

A venue that has hosted the Goya Awards, the National Lottery Christmas Draw and official visits from heads of state around the world carries a weight that no modern space can replicate. That weight works for your event before it even begins.

4. Arquitectura monumental

You walk in and fall silent. There is no need to say anything, because the space says it all.

The Sala Principal retains the original Italian-style structure with which it opened in 1850. The 1997 restoration recovered the decoration of the 1880s, the same that Verdi saw, the same that the royal family saw. The great central chandelier, in bronze and rock crystal, was made at the Real Fabrica de Cristales de La Granja. Since 2023, the dome of the hall has housed a 4K projection of the Madrid sky created by the artist Jaume Plensa, filmed from the theatre's own rooftop. The tapestries that dress the Salón Arrieta were made in Brussels and at the Real Fabrica de Tapices in the 17th and 18th centuries. Works from the Museo del Prado hang in the Salón Vergara. The Salón de Baile has a ceiling of 630 fibre-optic terminals that reproduce the Madrid sky on the exact night the theatre opened, with costumes from historic opera productions such as Aida and Anna Bolena on its walls. None of this is installed for your event. It has been here from the very beginning.

5. The most sustainable in the world

In 2025, the Teatro Real received the Sustainability Award at the International Opera Awards and became the most sustainable opera house in the world. It is not the first to try. It is the first to succeed.

Behind the title lie years of concrete work. A zero carbon footprint since 2019, a photovoltaic solar roof with 2,198 panels generating enough energy to supply 500 homes a year, water consumption cut by almost 50%, and the only Site of Cultural Interest in Spain with near-zero energy consumption.

The Sala Principal, with 1,958 seats across six levels and acoustics designed so that every word carries. The Salón de Baile, with 500 m² for galas of several hundred guests.
